Trefoil Dental Implant

What is Trefoil?

Trefoil is a new treatment that offers a high quality fixed solution for the lower jaw.  This treatment system allows for the shortest time to get fixed teeth, 6-8 hours. One can probably consider the name, “All-on-3.”  I say that, because the Trefoil system utilizes three dental implants and a prefabricated titanium bar to simplify the creation of the final product, saving the patient valuable time and money.

Within a single day, you can leave with the final prosthesis.  This type of treatment is revolutionary. I have found over the years that many patients don’t necessarily want something that they have to take in and out every single day.  Most people do not want to have to deal with dentures that may have the tendency to slip, or the sore spots that may develop–they want fixed dentures. Also, people that have a denture that snaps onto two implants do not have improved function compared to that of a fixed solution, like Trefoil.  Trefoil fills the void for individuals that aspire to have something that stays in, but cannot afford treatments such as All-on-4 or more implants.

Is Trefoil a type of dental implant?

Actually, Trefoil is a system that composes of the Trefoil Bar and the Trefoil Implant.  So, yes to answer your question, the Trefoil implant is a type of dental implant that plays an integral part of the Trefoil system.  Designed by Nobel Biocare, the implant has a surface that has a proven track record for high survival rates.

How many missing teeth is Trefoil for?

Trefoil is a treatment for individuals with failing teeth or missing all teeth on the lower jaw.

How long does it take?

Trefoil requires close cooperation with the dental laboratory.  At Madison Prosthodontics, we are fortunate to have not only a certified laboratory technician, but outstanding laboratory support to provide this service in one dental visit, within 6-8 hours.

What is the after care?

Patients usually receive the final prosthesis the day of treatment.  Thereafter, individuals return for routine follow up visits. Regular dental cleanings must be carried out at least on a 6 month basis to maintain the Trefoil system.

What’s the difference between Trefoil and All-on-4?

Trefoil is less expensive than All-on-4.  Trefoil MSRP ~$14,500 compared to All-on-4 MSRP ~20K.  Trefoil utilizes 3 dental implants, All-on-4 utilizes 4 dental implants.  Trefoil bar is pre-manufactured, so not everyone will be a candidate. The All-on-4 bar is customized.  Trefoil takes 6-8 hours to final prosthesis. All-on-4 takes 3-6 months, plus need for a temporary prosthesis.  Trefoil cannot be customized to Ceramic and Metal Restorations. All-on-4 can be customized to Zirconia and Metal Ceramic Restorations

As a prosthodontist, what is your favorite thing about Trefoil?

My favorite thing about Trefoil is the ability to provide a quality solution to another patient population.  There are many individuals that I see that want all-on-4, but cannot afford it. Trefoil fills that void in my practice.  It is a quality solution, but affordable to more individuals.

What is the feedback of your patients so far?

So, far I have gotten good feedback.  Patients are excited about this treatment concept and the ability to have the final prosthesis in the same day.  I have even had patients that had All-on-4 come back and ask if they were a candidate for this treatment. Unfortunately, this option wasn’t available at the time for me to offer to them.  For others, a fixed solution was a mere wish, as the costs were too expensive to obtain All-on-4. However, the Trefoil system fit into their budget and provided a solution that did not break the bank.
