dentures700In today’s world, one of the first things you see about someone, besides their face, is their smile.  USA Today published an article this month on a very interesting topic that I haven’t seen covered in the media before. The title of the article is To boost job prospects, younger Americans seek dentures. Missing teeth means missing out on job opportunities. This has caused many young people with tooth loss to see dentures as a way to get back into the workforce.

Having had experience working in a denture clinic, I would have to say that this article has a lot of truths to it.  Societal norms puts many pressures on people to look a certain way which can definitely affect one’s job opportunities.  A good smile can be linked to better self-esteem and self-worth, which impacts all areas of our lives, including getting and keeping a job.

One of the most appealing aspects of complete dentures is that individuals can obtain instant smile makeovers without the financial strain of other alternatives.  Whether having teeth taken out and getting dentures or just getting new dentures, people can find relief in removable prosthetic replacements.

Just be mindful that the drawback of removable dentures is that some individuals may have more difficulties than others when it comes to chewing and one’s diet usually has to change.  If diet does not change, then the way one eats food or the actual choices one makes when eating food will change.

This can have a total social transformation on a person’s well being. Technology is currently allowing for dentures to be digitally manufactured.  In the long run, this will decrease labor costs and allow for increased production, which gives hope to people like Pamela Sherman, who is a 51-year-old rest stop worker who lives near Richmond, Va. She’s had 10 teeth pulled, which makes her reluctant to smile on the job. The article quotes her as saying: “If I got new teeth, I could smile again,” she said. “Your smile and your face, that’s what you present to the world.”
